General Milroy Statue

(Not part of RENARTWLK)

Many of Jasper County's youth joined the Union Army during the Civil War. The City's most prominent soldier was General Robert Milroy (1816-1890). The statue stands on the site of the Milroy homestead. It was designed by Mary Washburn (1867-1965), a local woman who was deaf. Her career as an artist took her out of Rensselaer to the West Coast, where she spent most of her life. The base of the statue contains the names of all Jasper County residents who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Milroy did not return to Rensselaer after the war but became an Indian agent in the State of Washington.
