In the process of producing the third and final CD I did for Wayzata, I made considerable use of a font distortion program called Font-O-Matic. One of the reasons I could produce a sizeable number of Font-O-Matic distortions was that I started with a large group of fonts. If a designer has only done a couple dozen fonts, there is not much raw material to work with. I had already done almost three hundred typefaces before I bought Font-O-Matic, and hence had lots of raw material to feed it.

Of course one can always distort other people's fonts. There was a font CD available several years ago, heavily advertised, that claimed 2000 separate fonts. I got the flier for it, and found one of my shareware fonts, RedLetter, on it, though it was renamed. In addition to the original RedLetter, there was a bolder version, a hollow version, and a version that slanted to the left. Then RedLetter had been thrown into Font-O-Matic, and six more variations were created. Each of these was also presented in hollow, bold, and slant left. So RedLetter was the source of 28 of his 2000 fonts. Since RedLetter is a novelty font with very limited use, and it is not a font that yields interesting distortions, I need say no more for one to understand what the quality of this collection of fonts was. As far as I could tell, the entire collection was based on about 100 common shareware fonts, each distorted in a variety of ways.

Not all of the effects of Font-O-Matic were equally interesting, and in fact there were some that I never could find a use for, such as the "bite" effect, which was supposed to make a letter appear as if something had taken a bite from it. Another which I did use for a couple of fonts on Font Pro 5, but which I have, in the interests of good taste, omitted in this collection, put cow spots on letters. An effect which is a little more interesting made random holes in the font.

GrandecortHoly, based on Granecort, is one of two fonts with a "shot-up" look.
