I constructed a number of calligraphic faces using the "Expand Strokes" feature in Fontographer. (I am giving away secrets here.) Instead of constructing the entire path of the letter, one constructs a line which a calligraphic pen will follow. Then one sets the size and angle of the pen, and from that line a calligraphic font appears. Of course, the quality of the end product depends on the quality of the original line--garbage in, garbage out.
Handana is an informal cursive or script face, in which the letters look hand drawn, but in which they do not connect. It has a slight slant to the left, and it is stiffer and less rounded than GretchenHello, which is another informal calligraphic face.
