I constructed a number of calligraphic faces using the "Expand Strokes" feature in Fontographer. (I am giving away secrets here.) Instead of constructing the entire path of the letter, one constructs a line which a calligraphic pen will follow. Then one sets the size and angle of the pen, and from that line a calligraphic font appears. Of course, the quality of the end product depends on the quality of the original line--garbage in, garbage out.
Hermainita is a calligraphic typeface in the Carolingina or Humanistic style. The Carolingian style replaced the uncial style and preceded the Gothic styles. It reemerged during the Renaissance as the Humanistic style and formed the model for many of our modern letters.
Because it is very readable at small point sizes, I decided that Hermainita was worth further development, which led to Yngreena.
