In the process of producing the third and final CD I did for Wayzata, I made considerable use of a font distortion program called Font-O-Matic. One of the reasons I could produce a sizeable number of Font-O-Matic distortions was that I started with a large group of fonts. If a designer has only done a couple dozen fonts, there is not much raw material to work with. I had already done almost three hundred typefaces before I bought Font-O-Matic, and hence had lots of raw material to feed it.

Of course one can always distort other people's fonts. There was a font CD available several years ago, heavily advertised, that claimed 2000 separate fonts. I got the flier for it, and found one of my shareware fonts, RedLetter, on it, though it was renamed. In addition to the original RedLetter, there was a bolder version, a hollow version, and a version that slanted to the left. Then RedLetter had been thrown into Font-O-Matic, and six more variations were created. Each of these was also presented in hollow, bold, and slant left. So RedLetter was the source of 28 of his 2000 fonts. Since RedLetter is a novelty font with very limited use, and it is not a font that yields interesting distortions, I need say no more for one to understand what the quality of this collection of fonts was. As far as I could tell, the entire collection was based on about 100 common shareware fonts, each distorted in a variety of ways.

The Shattered effect from Font-O-Matic seemed best for bold fonts. It is an interesting effect, but as with most of the effects, it is not something one wants a lot of. I found three fonts which gave results I like.

SalloonCracked is based on Salloon, a font which invites interior designs. ValenteenaBroken, based on Valenteena, is another Victorian-styled font that I liked the effect on. (Since Valenteena is based on a heart motif, it seemed appropriate to break the hearts.) Finally the very flexible KolkmanBold gave rise to KolkmanShatter
